Black & White Ball, Fun for All

Jokers 'Hawaiian Style' Hoedown

49th Golden State Roundup

On May 11, about sixteen plus squares of Gadabouts, Krazy Dazys and guests enjoyed the calling of 'Gentleman Jim' Osborne and the cueing of Wally and Ione Wade.  Fortunately for Jim, there was an occasional couple dressed in 'colorful' non-black and white outfits.  For the rest of us it didn't matter, as we all had a good time as Jim was able to get us all back home with interesting and smooth-moving calls.  We thought the decorations were terrific and Jim and Wally looked splendid in their black and white tuxes and Jim even with a top hat.  Ione complemented the guys with her long black skirt.   The weather cooperated, the food was 'fantabulous', the calling and cueing were excellent, and the raffle prizes plentiful.  All in all a really classy and successful hoedown.

On May 18, it was Hawaii or at least it looked like Hawaii at John Muir.  Fortunately, the humidity of Hawaii didn't make it to the California shores.  The colorful Hawaiian outfits, the excellent, unhurried cueing of Jim Chico, and the relaxed, fun calling of Bob Elling contributed to an enjoyable evening.  Bob did his progressive squares tip part way through the evening, and it was great!  The door prizes were the potted flower decorations - very nice, and the raffle was for many, many prizes.  You put your ticket in a box for a prize from that group.  One box was for restaurant coupons, another for hotel/motel coupons, another for gifts that were displayed, another for Disneyland or Six Flags coupons along with several other fine prizes.  Richard won coupons for I-Hop.  The attendance was disappointing with only about a dozen squares which is lower than the 15-20 we have seen at recent hoedowns.  Those who were unable to attend sure missed out on a fun dance and festivities.

The 49th Golden State Round-up in Pleasanton at the Alameda County Fairgrounds on Memorial Day weekend was an enjoyable 3 days of dancing at the mainstream, plus and advanced levels.  In addition to the feature callers, Bob Baier, Dan Nordbye and Joe Saltel, the Northern California Association callers including Jim Osborne, the Roadrunners, called throughout the weekend.  There were over 900 dancers in attendance for the weekend which concluded with a three-hour long singing call plus dance on Sunday evening featuring all three callers harmonizing together to everyone's delight.  On Saturday evening a clogging group from Silicon Valley entertained everyone.  This was the second year that the Alameda County Fairgrounds were used for this event and many improvements were in place to make it more comfortable for the dancers.   Club members who made it over to the Tri-Valley area were Barry Binge and Janna Standridge, the Campbells and the Kenfields.  The Campbells and Kenfields enjoyed strolling through the streets of Pleasanton during the breaks.  The Frosty Ice Cream stand was a great thirst quencher stop.  The funniest moment was on Sunday evening, during the 7-10pm singing call session, when Dennis who was called on to spread his arms for someone to buy raffle tickets managed to somehow flip his cup of coffee in the air that showered Tom.  Fortunately the cup had cooled and no harm was done, not even a drop landed on Dennis's new shirt he bought at the vendors.   The 50th GS Roundup in 2003 will feature Deborah (Carroll) Jones and her caller-husband Jon Jones from Texas and Tim Crawford, a fabulous caller from Canada.  Hope you can make it there!

Hot time at 5th Wednesday

The 5th Wednesday at Campbell Middle School in Campbell was a steamy evening of dancing.  The Rafter Rockers hosted and callers on hand were Gary Carnes, Rafter Rockers; Keith Ferguson, Bows & Beaus; and Jim Osborne, Krazy Dazys.  The hall was so sweltering that several squares moved to the outside patio and danced in the cooler evening air.  Janna Standridge offered some kind parting words about this being the last occasion of the Gadabouts with the merging on June 1 with the Krazy Dazys after a year long affiliation.   In addition to Janna, the Cardonas, Mills, Masts and Kenfields were in attendance.

30th Ice Cream Fling Thing

The 30th Ice Cream Fling Thing June 1,  was a crowded affair with over 25 squares in attendance.  Harold Fleeman (his 30th) and our own Jim Osborne (his first) were the callers and kept everyone thoroughly entertained and Sue Harris did the cueing.   The Gaddys, Browns, McCoys, Masts, Wegeners and Kenfields were in attendance.  There were door prizes, split-the-pot and raffle prizes to attract everyone's attention.  The best part was the ice cream and the numerous garnishes, syrups and cookies that satisfied everyone's sweet tooth.  The evening closed with a tough plus tip that had many interesting figures Harold & Jim put together and the final singing call of "Mountain Music"  topped off a great evening.
